The Federal Chamber of Notaries maintains a register of notaries in accordance with Section 78I of the Federal Notarial Code (BnotO), which serves to inform the authorities and courts, persons seeking legal advice and other parties involved in legal transactions about the appointed notaries and notarial administrators. It also contains historical notaries and at which court or current notary their notarial files can be found today. It also serves to fulfill the tasks of the chambers of notaries and the Federal Chamber of Notaries. Access to the register is available to every citizen free of charge via the information portal of the Federal Chamber of Notaries. The search in the directory is made possible by an electronic search system.
The notarial register was created in the course of the register of wills, which made a central electronic register for notaries necessary due to the legal obligation of all notaries to participate in a central electronic register. The management of the NVZ was legally anchored in §78I of the Federal Notarial Code (BNotO). Westernacher Solutions carried out the design and development of the NVZ back then and continues to develop it today.
It is now an integral part of the IT landscape of the Bundesnotarkammer and is one of the most important central directories, not only for the ZTR, but also for the Central Document Archive, which will come into force in 2022, for example.
The notary directory of the Federal Chamber of Notaries contains information on active and historical notaries.
Over the years, it has not only undergone several facelifts, but the range of functions has also been extensively expanded. In addition to active notaries and notary administrators, it now also contains all historical notaries and the current location of their historical files, as well as all notary representatives and their current deputies, notary assessors, regional chambers of notaries, geographical responsibilities of notaries and much more. The information is also available to citizens via https://www.notar.de/, where anyone can find out about active notaries(notary search) and about historical notaries and the location of their files (document search).
The notary directory is an example of how a software system has been continuously adapted to changing requirements over many years and yet remains highly maintainable thanks to a good design and timely, consistent refactoring.
