On behalf of the German Federal Bar Association, Westernacher Solutions GmbH, together with Rockenstein AG, has been responsible for the further development, operation and support of the special electronic mailbox for lawyers since mid-2020.
The aim of electronic legal transactions is the secure exchange of messages and documents between lawyers, courts, authorities, notaries and other stakeholders. For this purpose, the transmitted information must be transmitted unchanged or unaltered and protected against unauthorized access. Furthermore, a recipient must be able to be sure that the message was really sent by the specified sender.
The special electronic lawyers’ mailbox (beA) now provides all lawyers with a simple, digital and secure solution for participating in electronic legal transactions. In addition to receiving and sending messages, beA also enables the simple signing of pleadings with a qualified electronic signature, which is equivalent to a handwritten signature, as well as the submission of electronic acknowledgements of receipt.
In addition to the technical security challenges, the ever-increasing number of users, with around 500,000 lawyers and their employees, as well as the rapidly growing number of messages – now over 8 million messages per month – represent a constantly growing task.
beA: Inbox and view of a message
By using agile development teams, Westernacher Solutions can react very quickly to new requirements and implement them. The highly available and scalable beA operation takes place in our own data centers. Westernacher Solutions is responsible for application operation, while Rockenstein AG provides the necessary infrastructure. The beA’s own support team provides users with very close support by telephone or email.
The active usage obligation for the beA came into force on 01.01.2022. Since then, communication with courts may only take place in digital form. Despite the significant increase in usage figures, beA is running smoothly! This is thanks to the great work of our development team, the operations team and all our support colleagues, who have mastered this challenge with great aplomb in collaboration with BRAK.
